What "spec analysis" means
- Heat-output math — BTU per square inch of primary cooking area ("heat flux"), not the raw total-BTU number printed on the box, which conflates fuel consumption with cooking area.
- Materials specs — grate material (cast iron, stainless steel, porcelain-coated steel) and what it actually trades off in heat retention, rust resistance, and maintenance.
- Temperature behavior — real controller accuracy for pellet grills, conventional low-and-slow zones (225/250/275°F) for smokers, and known lid-thermometer error bands, cross-checked against independent BBQ-science sources (AmazingRibs-class testing, manufacturer spec sheets).
